Address À La Carte Foods

À la carte foods are sold individually by the Food Service Department rather than as part of a school meal. They provide an alternative or addition to the reimbursable school lunch. À la carte foods can include healthy options (sandwiches, low-fat yogurt, fruit, salads, etc.) and less healthy options (ice cream, chips, cookies, etc.). Nearly all districts have à la carte foods in middle and high schools, and some also sell them in elementary schools.

The new USDA standards will positively impact the type of foods and beverages that can be sold. However, there is still more to do with better standards, better parental control, and better options.
